The Secret to Happy, Healthy Finches: A Proper Day/Night Cycle

This is number 4 in our series of articles on how you can successfully breed the happiest and most rewarding finches.

Watch out for another secret to follow.

Every animal, avian or not, is governed by a regular cycle of day and night. The feeding patterns, resting patterns, and other biological functions of finches are as dependent on day and night as humans.

When birds are kept in captivity (especially indoors), they may no longer experience the day and night cycle. This is where problems can arise. A finch that doesn’t know if it’s day or night will have a hard time resting. The bird’s young feeding patterns will also become erratic, because in the wild, finches are governed by sunlight and moonlight. Your breeding inclinations will also be restricted.

You can create a regular day and night cycle for all your birds in the house by using regular fluorescent light bulbs. The day cycle of the birds must last twelve hours (at least). The night cycle can last up to eight hours. Birds must have enough time to feed during the day cycle and enough time to rest during the night cycle.

Many bird enthusiasts make use of automatic timing mechanisms so that the day and night cycle can be implemented daily in an aviary with a minimum of disturbance.

It is recommended that you also install a dimmer mechanism set for thirty minutes before the lights turn off completely. This dimming of the lights will be the equivalent of dusk in the outside world and gives the birds enough time to finish their activities and find their resting places inside the cage or aviary.

As we’ve discussed in previous lessons, aviaries are really the way to go if you want happy, healthy flippers. If the finches have enough room to fly, they will be more than happy to mate and mate with another healthy finch to produce finch chicks.

If you have the resources for a full-size outdoor aviary, you can keep Various species of finches in the aviary without risking congestion. Finches are magnificent creatures and have some of the most beautiful plumage in the bird family. Seeing these exotic birds in flight in an outdoor enclosure would be a treat for anyone who loves the majestic beauty of nature.

But before you start building your own aviary, here are some easy tips to get you producing a ideal birdhouse in your garden:

  1. If you don’t want an outdoor aviary, an indoor aviary that is forty to fifty inches tall will suffice. Add more space if you want to add finches furniture as well.
  2. Try to achieve an equal ratio of male finches to female finches to avoid conflicts during the breeding season. Male finches will fight each other if there is a shortage of female finches. A group of female finches will also fight if there is only one male in the aviary or cage.
  3. When your aviary gets too full, it would be a good idea to start removing some of the birds. You can build a new aviary if you like, or you can create breeding cages or breeding flights for male and female pairs.
  4. If the aviary is large enough for people to enter, the entrance should lead to a smaller “room” that has a second door. This will prevent the birds from escaping from the aviary.
