A Catahoula with a light gray or tan coat will generally have almost identical spots to the leopard. This according to Darwinian theory would have been caused by natural selection. In this theory it was the result of natural selection in that it is a particularly effective camouflage in low light and cloudy conditions.

A good Catahoula or Cata-houla mix should have a short, plain coat, moderately drooping ears, large, round feet with thick pads and well-defined toes, and have a muscular but athletic build. They should have deep breasts, a distinctly rounded flank, and fairly long, straight legs.

A Catahoula will often have two different colored eyes. A working stock Catahoula generally has the inherent attributes necessary to work independently of any particular “specialty” of his father or mother. While some Catahoulas excel at a particular task, it should not be assumed that their offspring’s potential work capacity is limited in scope.

Unfortunately, according to an internet post/website, a Catahoula that is predominantly white, or a white-faced dog with glass eyes, has an 80% chance of being bilaterally deaf or unilaterally hearing. This means that the dog will be deaf in both ears or will hear only in one of its ears.

A Catahoula needs work to keep him happy, not everyone will like the high intensity relationship a Catahoula demands. A CLD is a herding dog first. Many of the same traits that make the Catahoula an excellent herding dog can be seen in its hunting style.

However, socialize them while they are puppies. Without careful socialization, they can be suspicious of everyone, which could lead to biting. Without sufficient socialization, some of these dogs can become fearful of strangers, which can lead to defensive biting.
