Even though Mario is ten years older, a very good case can be made for Sonic, when it comes to the title of “Most Popular Video Game Character” of ALL TIME. Let’s see the “Story of the tape”:

Sega’s Sonic is a blue anthropomorphic (shape-shifting) hedgehog with the ability to run faster than the speed of sound; his talent for speed forms a large part of the series’ gameplay. He is 15 years old. Sonic has been described as “like the wind”. He is noted for being heroic, adventurous, and free-spirited. He enjoys relaxation, but never rests in the face of injustice. He is extremely benevolent and would be willing to put himself on the line for others, taking on any challenge that comes his way without hesitation. Throughout the 15 years of his existence, Sonic has never been attached to any work, he is always collecting jewelry, so access to funds is not a problem for him.

Nintendo’s Mario, now at the ripe old age of 25, is more of a “George Foreman” type, Mario is always portrayed as a good-natured and brave hero. He helps those in need without hesitation. Despite his great hero status, Mario is very humble. His cheerful personality and his love for his life make him a very approachable video game character. He also loves pasta and pizza, as does the stereotypical Italian. Mario is supposed to be a plumber by trade, but in all his years I don’t remember him ever working any “plumbing” jobs, but always in the “rescue business” saving kingdoms from princesses or mushrooms from the big “Dino” type animals.

Based on these descriptions, they appear to have more in common than might have been originally thought.

Sonic’s speed would be his greatest asset in a matchup with Mario, while Mario counters with his tremendous jumping ability and Mario also carries a BIG HAMMER. Maybe this should be a “Steel Cage” match? LOL

Mario counters with his experience and “jumping ability” which I think would be the deciding factor in this battle as he would continue to stomp on Sonic’s head. Now let’s go with the “breakdown of the game”:

After reviewing the “tape story” above, I came to the conclusion that the winner of a competition between these two giants would be Mario for Knock Out. I think his perseverance and endurance would wear Sonic down and make Sonic’s only advantage (his speed from him) worthless to him.
