Sitcom characters who spend an episode with a toupee

One of the best treats we receive on Halloween is neither a candy bar nor a suction cup. It’s the “Treehouse of Horror” episode marathon from The Simpsonsthe classic sitcom currently airing on FXX.

Being a man with sparse hair, my favorite episode is in the ninth season of Treehouse of Horror. The segment is called “Hell Toupee” after Homer receives the recently executed criminal Snake Jailbird’s long locks. The hairpiece, in traditional Simpsons fashion, of course takes on a violent life of its own that is beyond the control of bumbling Homer.

Other than The Simpsons, a treasure trove of classic sitcoms, has featured episodes involving toupees. Here are some of the shows and characters that wore a hairpiece in an episode, for better or worse.

George in Seinfeld

Jerry’s best friend and sometime New York Yankees front office employee (played by Jason Alexander) had tried a rather smelly hair restoration product from China in a previous episode, but in a later one he bought a unimpressive toupee.

Celebrate in the Addams Family

Gomez’s uncle (played by Jackie Coogan) covered his usually slippery head with a forelock that scared even the extremely “creepy and wacky” clan that gave the show its name.

Emmitt at Mayberry RFD

After making several mysterious visits to the salon, Mayberry’s Mr. Fix It (played by Paul Hartman) makes an effort to look younger by giving a mess of fake follicles.

Kevin from the office

Michael Scott and the Dunder Mifflin paper company were determined to lower the average age of their staff, leading Creed to dye his hair a deep black and this accounting colleague to cover his bald top.

Alan from The Dick Van Dyke Show

The main character in the episode “Coast To Coast Big Mouth” is Laura (played by Mary Tyler Moore), who as a guest on a game show blurts out that her husband’s boss, Alan Brady (played by Carl Reiner), uses a toupee

The boss of Get Smart

“Operation Ridiculous” is the title of the episode where a fictional magazine called news of the week he sends a couple of young reporters to cover the great work that Maxwell Smart (played by Don Adams) and Agent 99 (played by Barbara Feldon) do in Control, so in order to make a good impression on their boss, the boss (played by by Edward Platt) wears a toupee.
