Massage tables: what to consider before buying a portable massage table

There are hundreds of portable massage tables on the market today. With the influx of cheap Chinese imports and other tables, deciding on the right table has become a daunting task. Here are the key things to consider before making your purchase decision.

1. Table Width:

Many people think that they should buy the widest table available, but there are several factors to consider when deciding on the width of your table. Ease of access, convenience for your client, convenience for you as a therapist, and portability are all things to consider when making your purchase decision.

Generally speaking, the narrowest massage tables will offer you the most access to your clients, as well as the most portability. Wider tables offer a larger work surface and greater comfort for your client. However, if your table is too wide, you may have a hard time reaching your customer effectively. This can become tedious and difficult on your body over a period of time.

For most general wellness massages, choose a width of 29″ to 30″ depending on your size and the size of your clients. Most tables come in a standard width; however, Oakworks, Earthlite, and Stronglite offer tables in various available widths. These tables are made to order, have numerous options, and are usually a bit more expensive.

Finally, as the width of the massage table increases, so does the weight. If you intend to travel and still want a wide table, consider purchasing a massage table cart to aid in portability.

two. Table height:

The standard height range on most tables is around 24″ – 34″ and will serve most practitioners performing various massage modalities, facials, physical therapy, acupuncture, and other therapeutic services. Generally speaking, the height range should be based on the height of the practitioner.

As a general rule, the table should not be higher than the hip joint. You’ll probably want a slightly lower height than this to allow room for body height above the table. If you are exceptionally tall or short, you may want to consider a table that has several height ranges available. Again, Oakworks, Earthlite, and Stronglite offer tables in various available height ranges. These tables are made to order, have numerous options, and are usually a bit more expensive.

3. Padding thickness:

When considering the thickness of your foam, you should always take into account the density of the foam. These two factors work hand in hand to determine comfort and durability. Since most massage tables come in a multi-layered foam, the only option left to consider is thickness.

The thickness of massage table padding typically ranges from 2 1/4 inches to 3 inches. This is usually enough to provide a comfortable experience for most customers. While you may be tempted to add thickness, this will add weight to the table and may not be conducive to portability. Finally, some modalities such as Sports Therapy are more appropriate for tables with firmer padding.

You’ll find that high-end custom tables offer a selection of optional tops, including firm, semi-firm, plush, maternity, and Breast Comfort.

Four. Easy Access Panels (Reiki End Plates):

Easy Access Panels are simply different support brackets that connect the two legs at the narrow ends of a massage table. Generally, the support panels go straight across the ends that connect the two legs.

Instead of going straight, the easy access panels are shaped like an inverted U, creating an arched support. This allows the practitioner to place their legs between the table legs and move closer to the client at the table. This is most important for Reiki practitioners who need access both above and below the client. It may also be convenient for any therapist to slide under the client on a rolling stool, to work on the head and/or feet.

Some massage tables come standard with and without Reiki end plates, while others are optional. This option is usually available at better tables for free or for a nominal charge.

5. Brand:

You can buy a no-name massage table at Costco for $199, but think twice before you try to save that $50. Companies like Earthlite, Oakworks, and Stronglite always stand behind their products. Most of these tables offer lifetime warranties on the frame and 2-3 year warranties on the upholstery and padding.

It is important to be tired of cheap imports without a recognizable brand name. The saying “you get what you pay for” definitely applies to massage tables. Don’t risk your safety or that of your customers on a cheap off-brand table. Not worth it!

6. Metal or wood structure:

Both wood and metal frames can provide a solid table base. Most wooden tables can support at least 450 pounds. The most popular tables have wood frames as they generally have better aesthetic appeal and tend to be less expensive than metal framed tables. However, metal frames often weigh less than their wooden counterparts. If you anticipate traveling a lot with your table, it might be worth looking at a table with a metal frame.

7. Stationary or portable:

If you will be traveling frequently with your massage table, you will clearly need a portable table. Make sure you get a package that includes a carrying case and other accessories. You might also consider purchasing a tabletop cart so you don’t have to carry the weight on your shoulders.

If you have a day spa, medi-spa, massage studio, or salon, you should consider portable and stationary massage tables. Some of the most comfortable and highest quality tables are stationary models. These can vary widely in price, but generally depend on the number of features and options, such as electronic height adjustment, manual or power tilt tops, salon tops, manicure armrests, and much more.

8. Weight:

Although weight is important when considering a portable massage table, it is not more important than the other factors discussed above. The weight depends mainly on the size of the table, the material and the padding. Wood tables are often heavy, but they often look better and can be more stable than metal tables. Remember that the wider the table and the thicker the padding, the more weight will be added to the table. Again, consider a tabletop cart to help make traveling easier without sacrificing size and comfort.

Most manufacturers offer a table with an aluminum frame, but the vast majority have wooden frames. Wood has proven to be the most widely used material for the aforementioned reasons and because it is more abundant and profitable. You generally want to stick with hardwoods like maple or oak as they tend to be more stable and durable.

If weight is very important to you, look for an aluminum table, but be prepared to pay more, as aluminum is often more expensive than wood.

Before buying your massage table, think about how important these qualities are to you. You most likely want to make a good first impression on your customers so they feel comfortable coming back. Your first experience before the actual massage is when you lie down on your table. Make sure it’s not squeaking and swaying or there won’t be a knock on the door!
