Everyone loves attractive tulips that blend in beautifully in spring. If you feel like having your own tulips in your garden, you can easily make them. And what’s more, you don’t need to wait until spring to plant those colorful flowers. When is the best time to plant tulip bulbs?

It is ideal to start planting your bulbs before autumn in cool areas.

Once you have everything ready, dig large holes about 6 to 8 inches deep, depending on how light your soil is. Mix the bone meal into each hole in the bulb. Place the bulbs 3 to 4 inches apart in the hole with the tips pointing up. Cover them with soil and be sure to fill them in well enough that the tulips don’t move. Water them frequently before and after the tulips bloom. You can also add some mulch when needed. This will keep them healthy as they grow and prevent the soil surface from cracking.

Tulips can spread up to 12 inches wide and grow 30 inches tall, so make sure the space is large enough for your tulips to bloom freely. If you notice that they do not bloom, it may be that the bulbs are very congested. You can fix this by digging up the tulips in late spring, just in time for the plants to die back. Then break the small bulbs that can be obtained from the base of the main bulb. You can then replant them one by one as long as each one has enough space and not too compressed.

Additional things that you should not miss when planting your tulips.

Fertilizers shouldn’t worry you much, at least for the first year of your tulips. In subsequent years, you can use fertilizer. While bone meal is the most common bulb food, you can also opt for organic fertilizers, compost, or cow manure.

Aphid infections can appear on flowers, so be sure to remove them as they occur, as they can cause more infections throughout the bed and affect the rest of the flowers.

To add extra vibrancy to the appearance of your tulips, you can combine them with other annual and perennial bulbs, flowers, or shrubs instead of placing them in plant beds. Plan the colors, sizes and heights. Decide which one you think will look best in your yard.
