How to become a rally driver

One of the best motor sports to watch is definitely rallying. Being able to see your car or the cars you pass on the road every day (admittedly heavily modified) flying over jumps, screaming around hairpin turns and crashing into trees is a lot of fun. There’s always an element of danger and a lot of speed to it, even if you’re just looking at it from the sidelines or on TV, and since you can drive, it’s one of those sports where you think you might as well try it yourself.

Well, you’re in luck because there are several ways (assuming you can drive) to become a rally driver. Here it goes…

your way of working

If you have the time, patience, determination and skill, you can work your way towards a career in rallying. Like most of the big names in the sport, you can start racing in karts and then progress to bigger and faster vehicles until you get the chance to join a rally team. The best way is to go the touring car route rather than the F1 style route so you get experience in the right kind of vehicles. This is definitely the longest way to do it, but it’s also the most respectable.

Rent a rally car

If you don’t have the patience for all that, you might want to rent your own rally car. There are plenty of places that will provide you with a car, performance car parts, a support team, mechanics, transportation to and from the venue, and usually can even fix it with your race paperwork. You don’t even necessarily need any driving skills, as you can even hire a driver, allowing you to just sit back and enjoy the ride as co-driver.

spend a lot of money

Your only other option is to spend a large amount of money. With enough cash, you can: buy yourself the training of a top-tier rally driver so that you have the required skill; you can buy a super nice car and all the parts you need; buy a place in the rally championships and all the support you need for it, as well as all the necessary transport, flights and logistics. It might cost you a lot of cash, but if you have it to spare, guess what, you are a real life rally driver.
