Help Wanted – Goals Needed!

The Great start to the New Year has been marred by a scoring drought.

After a beautiful goalkeeping battle between Henrik Lundqvist and Martin Brodeur in a 0-0 regulation and extra time, Rangers thought they could ride Henrik Lundqvist’s back and pick up points from every game like this.

The next game against the Ottawa Senators would prove the same for the Rangers in the goal scoring department. But this time it was for a struggling team and a substitute goalkeeper. It is not the first place of the Eastern Conference of the New Jersey Devils. Maybe it had something to do with the Ottawa goalie’s last name, since it was also Broduer, but his first name was Mike and not Martin. The game as a whole was a disappointment compared to how they played against the Devils.

Now we are in six consecutive periods without a goal for, ouch! Not a good recipe for winning hockey games.

Saturday night’s game against the St. Louis Blues after one period of play would go seven straight periods without scoring a goal.

Finally, in the second period, B. Boyle would finally break the drought after stealing a puck behind the Blues’ net and putting up a backhand at home to give Rangers their first goal in 172 minutes of play. A sigh of relief!

The goal not only ended Rangers’ drought, but tied the game at one against the Blues, who were the proud owners of three straight wins.

With Chad Johnson making his second start between tubes, he would have a failed third period of play. Blues would score solo: 45 in the third to break a 1-1 tie and then Chad would allow a poor goal without capping the post to put the Blues up 3-1. Blues would add an empty net and win 4-1 while winning his fourth straight.

Next up for the Rangers is the Canadians, who are right behind them in the standings, making this a great game, and Scotty Gomez’s return to the outfield should make for a fun or miserable night.
