What happens during a table shower (body scrub massage)?
Tabletop showers (or also called ‘body scrub/wash massage’) provide a truly invigorating and relaxing experience. Better yet, aside from a moment of pampering, they bring so much more to the ‘table’ in the form of health benefits.
While many people may have heard of tabletop showers, many are unfamiliar with what exactly they are or what to expect to happen during one.
We hope to help bring the details to your attention so that you feel comfortable getting one at your local massage spa. We think he’ll see it’s worth it, and may even wonder why it took him so long to figure it out!
Where do table showers take place?
Most massage spas tend to have individual or private shower rooms where you get your tabletop shower. Configurations may differ from business to business, but virtually all will have a massage table in the center of the room that has been fitted with a waterproof cover (usually plastic). Clean towels are placed on the table before each session for hygiene reasons.
Some tabletop showers feature a series of showerheads directly above the tabletop that give the recipient a water-based massage or cascading rain effect. Others will feature handheld shower heads that your masseuse will use for your session.
What do I wear during this type of treatment?
During tabletop showers, you generally don’t wear anything, but state laws generally require you to be covered at all times during your session. This is the same as most massage therapy regulations, except instead of being covered with a sheet, your private areas are covered with a towel.
What is the table shower treatment??
This service goes a long way in keeping your skin healthy and clean because it is usually scrubbed from head to toe (except for the obvious areas!) with an exfoliating sponge/cloth or body wash/cleansing scrub. Exfoliation is the process of removing dead skin cells from your body to expose the fresh, ‘younger’ skin underneath. This helps prevent acne, ingrown hairs, and improves the overall appearance and health of the skin.
After you lie face down on the table, your masseuse will shower your body with water at the temperature that you prefer. Then comes the body exfoliation with gentle movements similar to those of a massage. This helps not only to cleanse the skin, but also helps to increase blood circulation and induce a state of relaxation. Once finished, comes the final rinse. Most spas that offer tabletop showers will also wash your hair on request. Why not?
On average, most tabletop showers last between 30 minutes and an hour.
