Understanding Game Classes: Templars of Aion

In the Aion game, if you choose to have a character start as a warrior, upon reaching level 10 you can make that character become a Templar. The Templars are Daevas (winged and immortal humans) who are the absolute masters of defense, although their ability to attack should not be underestimated.

There is an old Atreian proverb that says, “When all else fails, send a Templar.” This is for a very good reason. Templars can swap their sword or mace and shield for a greatsword if the situation calls for it (usually when an enemy can be quickly knocked down or killed), so they are capable of dealing heavy damage and damage to enemies, albeit once more. Their main skill set involves being the defenders. Nezekan, the empyrean lord of justice, is the protective deity of all Templars.

Typically, a Templar fights with a sword or mace in one hand and a shield in the other, acting as a protector for allies on the battlefield. They are also adept at getting the attention of enemies with good “trash talk”, causing them to divert their attention from the others in their group to distract them from being able to defend themselves from the attacks of others. The Templar can also wield the shield as a very effective weapon. Enemies can be knocked down or stunned this way, so that the enemy can be knocked down through a series of linked moves.

As a solo player, the Templar almost always uses a weapon in one hand and a shield in the other, as the first priority is to mitigate damage. Even if the enemy is not killed, they can be severely damaged or stunned, so that any of the Templar allies have something less to fear or are easier to kill later on.

However, it is clear that where a Templar really shines is within the groups, because here the highest functions of the character come to light. Allies are protected and enemies stay away from them and the hard-to-damage Templar. While attacking in frustration, allies can hit the enemy with lethal force without being repulsed. When you are a very skilled Templar, you can face and handle multiple enemies at once and lose them all through your taunting “trash talk.”

So the Templar has a high defense base; the ability to further increase defensive prowess through Plate Armor and skill augmentation; and the ability to turn defensive stance into an offensive weapon. If you love to play defense, start out as a warrior and then become a Templar in Aion.
