Just a quick search on Amazon turns up hundreds of books ranging from the general advice book, to the instructional/teaching type, to comprehensive strategy and probability calculating books. Deciding which book to buy and how much you should actually pay to get the information you want can be a daunting task.

For most people who play Texas Hold Em Poker it is a form of recreation; a hobby that is enjoyed. If you’re in this boat, chances are no matter which book you buy, you’ll enjoy reading it and learn a thing or two. If you are very passionate about gambling or are using your winnings as some sort of income, then you may be under a bit more pressure to get results quickly. You may seriously want a book packed with loads of extremely useful information, so your book may be a little harder to find.

When looking for a good Texas Hold Em Poker book, look for the following things.

First: the title. Look at the headline and make sure it’s clear, concise, and speaks directly to you. If you want a strategy guide, find a book like ‘Texas Hold Em Strategy Guide’. Don’t look for an advice book or anything else. The title should be directed to what you want to achieve. This is your best resource for finding the book you want.

Second: the author. Who is the author? Do they have any reputation in the poker field? Consider entering the author’s name into Google and spending a few quick moments checking them out. If the person has a Wikipedia entry and is known to be in that field, then they are probably very good. This is not a prerequisite, just a hint.

Third: look inside the book. Amazon allows you to read the table of contents of a book and also view a couple of pages. Read the TOC and make sure the points speak to what you want to learn. Because I have bought/read so many books, I search for more, but sometimes I find a dodgy little book of Texas Hold Em Poker Tips and customer reviews say “not good information”, “just slapped it in no time”. ‘it is not a quality book’, etc. When I see this, I realize it’s not worth my money or time, and I’ll probably learn more just by concentrating on actual practice.

Which brings me to my last point. actual practice. No matter how good a Texas Hold Em book you are reading, you are not going to get good at poker just by reading it. If you want to get good at poker, which is presumably why you’re reading books, you really have to practice. I don’t deny it, I even agree that the books are extremely helpful if you want to learn how to play poker, understand the rules, learn strategies and tips, know the odds and all that. In fact, I learned most of the technical stuff I know from books, but seriously, you have to take all that information and then put it to use in a game. The thrill of poker, the adrenaline rush, the quick decisions, the gut sensations are only learned by being in the game and doing it. As much as I like to read, I like playing poker better, so that’s where I spend my time.
