Jet Sweep Installation

Installing the Jet Series on your offense, or as your offense, is a lot easier than you think. It’s a series that can bring an advantage to any offense. Teams with higher skill players, lower skill players, a great offensive line, a not so good offensive line, it doesn’t matter. The Jet Series is for whatever crime you are willing to commit and take the time to install it properly.

To commit to Jet, you need to understand the philosophy of the base game, Jet Sweep. The idea behind the Jet Sweep is to give the ball to a ball carrier with a running start and get to the edge. A simple blocking scheme is used, similar to what an offense can already use when executing a draw sweep. It is key to understand that no defender of the front 3 and back technique does not need to be blocked. They cannot do the work. Any play in the series should look exactly like the Jet Sweep. Many teams will add Jet Sweep to their offense and not incorporate it into their system. Please note that the Jet and its companion games are not cheat games. They are a system and, like any offensive system, they require a compromise. With that said, let’s take a look at the base game.

The entire series begins with Jet Sweep. Each and every play in the series must resemble Jet Sweep at all times. As such, we must start with a deep understanding of Jet Sweep. We did it with the Jet Drill. With the Jet Drill, you can rotate players or use bags or cones to represent offensive linemen. If you have one, you can extend the tape with the OL marks. Whatever you choose, it is important that your backs have landmarks. Then simply work through the exercise by emphasizing the training points below. Each snap should look the same with an emphasis on getting the ball to the perimeter.

Basic rules and training points

1. The Jet series always runs “in 1”. Our cadence is “Color-Number, Color-Number, Set, Hut”.

2. The jet back moves at full speed in “Set”.

3. The quarterback must cause the ball to break when the Jet’s back reaches the OG’s outside leg.

4. QB’s footwork involves a 6 “side step into space A on the game side and then a reverse pivot at 5 or 7 o’clock.

5. The ball is delivered to the RB in space A on the playing side.

6. Upon receiving the ball, the RB takes a small bucket step to give up some ground and then continues with the hash, the numbers, and the sideline.

7. The FB takes a small side step, allowing the RB to clear, and then travels the Dive / Trap path right through the center.

8. The quarterback will simulate with the FB and then continue with a false start.

The basic rules for blocking the Jet Sweep are the same as for blocking our Toss Sweep or our game in the Outer Zone. Any defender within technique 3 on the front side cannot make the play, therefore in some situations we will pull an open OL to put it in front of the ball carrier. The center-back lineman will remain at the side of the game. If they are covered and the defender leans toward the Jet action, they attack the defender. If the defender moves away from the action of the Jet, he can continue his track to the next defender. The same applies to an open OL; he would continue on the track to get to the next defender.
